Professional

Grant was previously a Field Director of the Missoula office. Below, Grant discusses his introduction to the Northwestern Mutual company and his current thoughts about his position.

I was very lucky to find this career as easily as I did. I was looking at different opportunities when my (then) father-in-law suggested I talk with Northwestern Mutual. He did not own any of their products, but knew, by reputation, what a good company it was. I contacted the local office and began the testing process. After my research on the company and contact with them through the testing and licensing process, I felt confident this was the right company for me to work with. I didn't feel the need to interview with any other company I was very impressed with Northwestern Mutual from a company aspect, and as a consumer. I wrote my first contract in November of 1991.

In this career I enjoy the opportunity and freedom of having my own practice. It allows me to relate on a first hand level to some of the problems and challenges that my clients go through as business owners. I like the fact that most of my clients are also my friends and family, who have referred and trusted me with their friends and family. I am in a unique position to help them protect what they feel is important in their lives, and help them realize their financial dreams. It is a career that is challenging and very rewarding knowing I can have an impact on the lives of the people around me.

Personal

I have been a resident of Montana for the past 51 years. Currently, I enjoy the Bitterroot Valley and live in the Stevensville area.

I enjoy my small hobby farm and raise grass-fed Galloway beef. I am also an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoors man which has taken me all over the world. I enjoy experiening the culture and seeing the unique wildlife and incredible landscapes in foreign countries. My adult children and I spend time together as often as possible, and my labradoodle, Curly, follows me nearly everywhere I go. We all greatly enjoy the many compellingly beautiful outdoor adventures Montana has to offer. As soon as the weather is warm, I can be found on backpacking trips, fishing, and camping.

Some additional hobbies I enjoy are skiing and golfing. I was a former rugby player for the Missoula Maggots and I enjoy spending time with my former teammates when the opportunity arises.

Lending a hand in my community.

As part of Northwestern Mutual, I'm proud to help accelerate the search for better childhood cancer treatments while supporting families undergoing treatment, and survivors from late effects. Here are some of the organizations we partner with:

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer (ALSF)

ALSF funds cancer research, raises awareness, and supports the families of children with cancer. Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual, its employees, and financial professionals like me have donated more than $20 million to support ALSF and fund over 400,000 research hours.

How Northwestern Mutual helps you live the life you want.

When people feel better about their money, good things happen—they become more confident and feel more secure. For more than 160 years, Northwestern Mutual has helped people achieve the financial flexibility they need to live more and worry less.

Being a mutual company means Northwestern Mutual reports to its clients, not Wall Street. They don't believe in chasing fads or taking undue risk for short-term gains. Instead, they take a long-term approach—both in the way we help people plan to reach their goals, and in the way they do business. This has served their clients (and mine) well through all kinds of economic ups and downs, including wars, recessions, even the recent pandemic.

It's why I'm happy to be part of a company that's in it for the long-haul and prioritizes clients over profit.
