Lending a hand in my community.
Giving back to the community is imperative and an obligation for my family and me. When our communities are strong, thriving and prospering, we are all better served and our lives are richer as a result.
Being engaged in the community is more than another step on the corporate ladder, it is a necessity. There is no greater feeling than paying forward and giving back. I have spent much of my adult life living by these principles and encourage others to do the same. It’s not always about writing a check.
Sometimes it’s equally rewarding when you take the time to volunteer in a food-line for the homeless or shop with an impoverished child for new clothes for the school year. And when you do, you are able to give something much greater than dollars alone and touch hearts.
Here are some of the organizations we partner with:
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer (ALSF)
ALSF funds cancer research, raises awareness, and supports the families of children with cancer. Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual, its employees, and financial professionals like me have donated more than $20 million to support ALSF and fund over 400,000 research hours.

Beads of Courage
Beads of Courage is an art-in-medicine program that helps kids with cancer tell their unique treatment story through colorful beads that are symbols of their courage.

Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc.
There is no greater pain than hunger or a worse state of mind than that of hopelessness. “From the moment that I became engaged with Broward Partnership, I was convinced that this organization was making a difference and providing opportunities for the homeless to turn their lives around, something that I have witnessed first-hand as a volunteer and while attending events in support of this great cause," said Ed McCluskey. An organization with a sterling reputation, Broward Partnership can say with conviction that nearly 90 cents on every dollar raised benefits those in need, a testimony to their accountability and a remarkable achievement for a non-profit organization. For Ed, being involved in Broward Partnership is what it feels like to give someone hope for a better future.
Kristi House, Inc.
Did you know? Kristi House rescues the forgotten victims of sexual abuse. Also, Kristi House is dedicated to protecting, respecting and healing the children. Kristi House is a private, not-for-profit organization in Miami, FL, dedicated to healing and eradicating child sexual abuse. Kristi House operates the Orlowitz-Lee Children’s Advocacy Center responsible for sexual abuse cases in all of Miami-Dade County. The Center is comprised of seven partner agencies involved in meeting the legal, medical and emotional needs of child victims of sexual abuse and sex trafficking, and holding the perpetrators responsible. Motivated to helping our society’s most vulnerable, Ed is a donor and supports the organization’s annual hallmark fundraiser: The Touch of Heart Dinner & Auction.
Jason Taylor Foundation
Giving back. It is simple concept, but one not grasped often enough. One person who fully understands what it means to give back is Jason Taylor, ESPN Analyst, legendary Miami Dolphins Defensive End and 2007 NFL Man of the Year. From his humble beginnings as a Pittsburgh youth serving as a missionary, to his endless hours of community involvement as an NFL superstar, Jason Taylor has always given something of himself to those less fortunate. Choosing the Jason Taylor Foundation to support was an easy decision for Ed and his family. The Foundation’s goals and mission are clearly in keeping with Ed’s values and desire to give back. Jason Taylor is an exemplary role model for doing the right thing by building a better future for kids.
Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCHF)
When Northwestern Mutual adopted childhood cancer as a cause that they wanted to support, Ed wanted to do more. The vision and mission of MCHF are: 1) Help ensure the health and happiness of children everywhere and 2) To raise funds and awareness for Miami Children's Hospital. MCHF supports the Hospital by providing the opportunity for members of the community to invest in our children’s future. Our contributions help provide children with the doctors, facilities and innovations that give them the best chance to heal. Ed and some of his colleagues pooled their resources in support of Miami Children’s Hospital. They have supported Foundation Signature events including, Wine, Women and Shoes which raised over $450,000 and the Diamond Ball, a hallmark event for the Foundation.
Construction Association of South Florida (CASF)
There are many forms of giving back and community involvement also includes support of professional organizations. Ed and his colleague Matt Olsen are long-time supporters of the Construction Association of South Florida. Their involvement includes participation as “Presenting Sponsors” at annual Bowling and Golf tournaments, monthly breakfasts and membership appreciation events. CASF is a non-profit organization whose members are from all aspects of the construction industry. Our members include general contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, design professionals and other professionals, such as attorneys, accountants and financial professionals – each with a vested interest in the building industry.
Urban Land Institute (ULI)
The Urban Land Institute is a professional organization with deep roots in the community. Ed and his colleague Matt Olsen have been involved with ULI for over five years. Together, they have sponsored many of the organization’s events, including: the annual Economic Outlook meeting where Northwestern Mutual’s Real Estate professionals had a seat at the table during a forum/panel segment of the event. They are also a sponsor of the ULI annual Vision Awards. The Urban Land Institute provides leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. ULI is an independent global nonprofit supported by members representing the entire spectrum of real estate development and land use disciplines.
How Northwestern Mutual helps you live the life you want.
When people feel better about their money, good things happen—they become more confident and feel more secure. For more than 160 years, Northwestern Mutual has helped people achieve the financial flexibility they need to live more and worry less.
Being a mutual company means Northwestern Mutual reports to its clients, not Wall Street. They don't believe in chasing fads or taking undue risk for short-term gains. Instead, they take a long-term approach—both in the way we help people plan to reach their goals, and in the way they do business. This has served their clients (and mine) well through all kinds of economic ups and downs, including wars, recessions, even the recent pandemic.
It's why I'm happy to be part of a company that's in it for the long-haul and prioritizes clients over profit.
