Establishing an environmentally sensitive corporate footprint

As a purpose-driven company, we strive to be good stewards of the environment in pursuit of delivering long-term value to policyowners and clients. That stewardship includes taking practical steps to manage and reduce our environmental impacts by optimizing energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management, while maintaining a consistent focus on how our working environment shapes the on-campus experience.

Stewardship built into our operations

  • Office design

We design our offices in reference to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the WELL Building Standard best practices

  • Energy efficiency

We regularly monitor our energy usage, which includes identifying opportunities for facility enhancements.

  • Water conservation

We track water metrics to identify leaks and target upgrades, and we build conservation into our campus designs.

  • Waste management

We minimize waste through educational campaigns and by reducing single-use plastics on our campuses. Our recycling, composting, and reuse programs help lessen the impact of the waste we do generate.

  • Carbon footprint

We account for our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions consistent with Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidelines.

Modernizing our North Office Building

In 2023, we launched a $500 million investment in our North Office Building at our downtown Milwaukee campus. Extensive renovations to the 1990 building will mirror the award-winning Tower and Commons and emphasize sustainability—featuring advanced energy measurement, creative reuse of materials, lower-impact materials, and employee-focused spaces. Whole building life cycle assessments help us understand the environmental benefits from these changes.

Connecting corporate employees with the environment

Access to nature is a key part of our campus experience. Garden areas like the green roof at our Milwaukee campus, in addition to making our cities more climate resilient and enhancing local biodiversity, are regularly cited by employees as having a positive impact on their well-being at work.
